Creative Wales, a government agency in Wales, has introduced a new initiative to strengthen the country’s gaming sector.
The newly launched Games Scale Up Fund for Wales is intended to support gaming companies looking to expand their domestic and international operations. The program focuses on helping developers transition their projects into sustainable models that ensure long-term success while enhancing their overall value. Eligible businesses can secure funding ranging from £50,000 to £150,000 to fuel their growth.
In addition to receiving support from the Games Scale-Up Fund, companies may qualify for production funding, another Welsh government initiative to ensure local content reaches a global audience.
The gaming industry is not the only sector experiencing growth in Wales. The country’s esports industry has also seen significant developments throughout 2024. In January, Esports Wales received backing from Meida Cymru’s Development Fund, part of an effort to establish Cardiff as a central hub for the media industry and stimulate economic development.
Esports Wales has also collaborated with Agored Cymru to introduce an esports education qualification. The qualification equips students with the necessary skills to organize esports events and gain insights into the broader industry ecosystem.
This year has been marked by notable advancements in esports across the UK. Alongside the progress in Wales, the Scottish Esports Network, led by Mark McCready and Dale Murray, launched Scottish Esports to support both casual gamers and competitive players in Scotland. The initiative aims to help players participate in local and international tournaments.
